Stratford is centrally located within Taranaki. The
town is a rural service centre for the mainly dairy
based agricultural community.
Stratford township has a population of approximately
5600 and also serves as home for many people who work
in nearby Eltham and Hawera with their dairy factory
and meat processing plants as well as the Taranaki energy
industry.
Stratford is moving towards becoming the Shakespeare
centre of New Zealand - it has an Appointed theatre
and all of the street names are derived from Shakespeare.
The Shakespearean theme has been taken on by many businesses.
Stratford is also the gateway to the national parks
and has a steadily increasing visitor turnover as tourists,
particularly Europeans, seek to get off the Central
North Island tourist track.
